The Guilford lakes School has been awarded a grant by the GFFE to install alternative/flexible seating in a fourth grade classroom under the direction and supervision of Lori Luyckx and Jennifer Kennedy.
Accommodations were made for students with identified needs; however, many of these accommodations have improved learning for all students. Recent research has shown the benefits of flexible seating in classrooms, including standing desks, and tables at varied heights. Seats that allow for vertical movement and wedge cushions, literally put kids on the edge of their seats. Having a variety of work place options available in a single classroom, combined with a teacher who facilitates reflection, creates a contemporary learning environment where students are self-managing the quality of their work.
