2009-2010 Academic Year GrantsThe Guilford Fund for Education approved the following grant applications in 2009-2010. Sharing, Caring and Living Fifth Grade Math
Gina Broccoli, Math Department, Baldwin Middle School. “Sharing, Caring and Living Fifth Grade Math.” A GFFE grant will help students solve real life problems as a team using a sophisticated student response system, digital projector, Bluetooth keyboard and digital interactive tablet. Speaking in Tongues
Sharon Jacobson, Foreign Language Department, Guilford High School. “Speaking in Tongues.” GFFE will help GHS student improve their speaking and listening foreign language skills by supplying computer headsets and access to digital recording and editing software. Yale Model United Nations Conference
Michael Dalton, Social Studies Department, Guilford high School. “Yale Model United nations Conference.” A GFFE grant will enable the GHS Model United Nations club to participate in the upcoming International Model United Nations Conference at Yale University. Interact Club Digital Display and Showcase
Anna Goodridge, student at Guilford High School. GFFE will help the GHS Interact Club build a digital display and showcase to exhibit Interact Club activities and the acitivities or other GHS clubs. Green Carnival
Amanda Merrill, Calvin Leete school. A GFFE grant will allow six fourth graders to create a carnival celebrating environmentally friendly practices. The money raised from the carnival will be donated to a "green" cause. Writer's Workshop
John Terenzi, Guilford High School, was awarded an Apple Grant to attend a week-long writers’ workshop this summer at Exeter Academy, to spend a week writing under the tutelage of some of the finest instructors in the country. The workshop has the dual objective of providing professional development as well as nurturing a teacher’s creative impulses as a writer. CT Art Education Conference
Joe Bernier, Guilford Lakes and A. W. Cox Elementary Schools, received an Apple Grant to attend the Connecticut Art Education Association Fall 2010 Conference, where he hopes to gain knowledge about the visual arts portion of the Connecticut Common Arts Assessment Initiative. National Art Education Association Convention
Sharyn Maher, Calvin Leete and Melissa Jones Elementary Schools, was awarded an Apple Grant to attend the five-day National Art Education Association Convention in Baltimore, April 14-18. Conference attendees join more than 20,000 other professionals at over 200 workshop sessions relating to the theme, “Art Education and Social Justice.” Engaging Young Students in Learning
Kathy Chamberlain, Calvin Leete, was awarded an Apple Grant to attend a workshop by Dr Jean, whose presentations focus on engaging young students in learning through the use of interactive songs and activities. The workshop also offers: time saving and organizational tips; learning center management techniques and ideas for differentiating instruction and balancing instruction with large and small groups. Boats and Literature
Dave Hackett, GHS Technology/Woods, and Cara Mulqueen-Teasdale, GHS English, were awarded a grant to fund a 19 day, interdisciplinary Summer school project at Guilford High School for the Summer of 2010. In the class, the students will build a boat while studying literature about boats. There will be a writing element to the project in the form of a daily journal. Guilford Youth and Family Services Summer Camp
Mike Kosko of Guilford Youth and Family Services was awarded a grant to partially fund a summer camp for underprivileged Guilford youth. This summer camp is for middle schoolers aand is the third year of a developing model. The two week camp allows at-risk youth to have fun and challenging experiences within the frame of building their emotional and social development. Kindle in the Classroom
Baldwin School language Arts Specialist Karen Chapman envisions the Kindle as an effective mechanism for improving both fluency and vocabulary in her students—two key academic areas for developmental readers. GFFE awarded her a grant to purchase two Kindles and a library of electronic books. She anticipates employing them as a support for English Language Learners, who would be able to read independently at their individual levels. |
